Prompt Engineering
Prompt Engineering: How precise instructions for AI systems are formulated and why companies need standards rather than individual expertise for this.
IT Glossary
In brief
Prompt Engineering refers to the targeted formulation of instructions for an AI system. A good prompt contains the task, context, desired format and boundaries of the response: the more specific, the more reliable the result.
In a business context, what matters less is the skill of individual users than a common standard: tested templates for recurring tasks, aligned wording for customer communication and clear guidelines on which data may be entered into a model in the first place.
This transforms an individual skill into a reproducible process. How templates, training and guardrails interact is covered in the Microsoft Copilot Workshop and AI Governance for Microsoft 365.
