Phishing
Phishing explained: Attack patterns from mass emails to CEO fraud and which technical and organisational countermeasures take effect.
IT Glossary
In brief
Phishing refers to the attempt to obtain login credentials or induce an action, such as a bank transfer, via fake messages. The spectrum ranges from mass emails to targeted attacks on individual persons (spear phishing) and impersonating executive management (CEO fraud).
Modern variants operate without spelling errors, use genuine reference numbers and increasingly run via chat, SMS or telephone. Multi-factor authentication is also targeted, for example through fatigue induced by confirmation requests.
Protection is achieved through a combination of technical filters and sender verification, phishing-resistant login procedures, clearly defined approval processes for payments and regular staff awareness training. Find out more under IT Security and Training.
