ISMS – Information Security Management System
ISMS explained: How an information security management system is structured and why businesses need it.
IT Glossary
In brief
An Information Security Management System (ISMS) is the organisational framework used by a company to manage information security: risks are assessed, measures prioritised and implemented, their effectiveness measured and deviations corrected.
An ISMS includes a defined scope, a risk methodology, policies and responsibilities, key metrics as well as regular internal audits and management reviews. Technical protective measures are part of it, but only one part.
The most common standard for this is ISO/IEC 27001; in German-speaking countries, BSI IT-Grundschutz is also relevant. An ISMS is often the basis for providing proof to customers, insurers and regulatory authorities. Read more under ISO 27001 and ISMS.
