SASE – Secure Access Service Edge
SASE explained: Network and security as a cloud service – what lies behind it and which companies stand to benefit.
IT Glossary
In brief
SASE (Secure Access Service Edge) describes the convergence of networking and security functions into a cloud-based service. Instead of routing all traffic through headquarters, locations, devices and mobile employees connect to a nearby security layer.
Typical components include software-defined WAN, secure web access, firewall capabilities and application access based on the zero-trust principle. The benefit lies in equivalent protection regardless of location and reduced backhauling of data traffic.
For companies with multiple locations, extensive mobile working and applications in the cloud, SASE can replace traditional site connectivity. Whether a transition is worthwhile can be determined by an assessment of the IT infrastructure.
