Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft Copilot: AI assistant in Microsoft 365 – what it can do, which prerequisites are necessary, and why permissions are crucial.
IT Glossary
In brief
Microsoft Copilot is the AI assistant in Microsoft 365 applications. It summarises email threads, drafts documents, analyses spreadsheets, and answers questions about content to which the respective user has access.
This is precisely where the most important requirement hinges: Copilot sees everything the user is permitted to see. If permissions in SharePoint and Teams have grown over the years, Copilot brings to light what was already shared too widely. Before implementation, checking permissions, data quality, and governance is therefore essential.
In terms of licensing, Copilot is added per user in addition to the Microsoft 365 licence; selecting user groups with genuine benefit makes more sense than a full rollout. The basis for this is the Copilot Readiness Assessment.
