In brief
MDM and MAM – these two terms go hand in hand. They concern the management of mobile devices and mobile applications. (In full, the terms stand for "Mobile Device Management" and "Mobile Application Management".) Mobile devices often already play a larger role than desktop computers. Therefore, the use of MDM and MAM systems in businesses has become virtually indispensable. The use of mobile devices is already standard for companies of any size.
MDM briefly explained:
With the help of a Mobile Device Management system, all of the company's mobile devices are administered centrally. Managed devices can include smartphones, laptops, tablets or PDAs. Through the system, company-owned hardware is not only inventoried, but can also be managed and controlled in various ways. Some manufacturers and companies support BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) here, which enables you to also include devices in the system that your employees bring themselves.
Data protection and compliance are now of very great importance. The implementation of guidelines and policies can be carried out very conveniently using a mobile device management system. Depending on the provider of the management tool, there are options for grouping devices and establishing rules. Updates can also be centrally managed and rolled out in a controlled manner.
MAM – Systematic application management
While MDM is more about hardware, MAM – Mobile Application Management – deals with the software on the devices. Applications can and should be managed and controlled just as deliberately. For example, creating a company-owned app catalogue is a sensible use of a Mobile Application Management system. Employees thus receive targeted access to company-owned or intentionally highlighted applications. Licences are also controlled and logged by a MAM for an improved overview. Furthermore, application usage can be tracked and evaluated, which represents useful information in the application lifecycle. From a data protection perspective, data exchange via applications can be restricted or even completely disabled. All of this is in the hands of the administrator.

A wide variety of management systems is available on the market, including from major and well-known manufacturers such as Microsoft. Microsoft Intune, for instance, is a cloud-based service for managing mobile devices and apps, setting data protection policies, and providing protection regarding security requirements. Choosing the optimally suited product is not always easy; after all, it should fit your needs as best as possible and cover all your requirements. Intune, AirWatch, MobileIron – the choice is vast.
