IT Glossary
In brief
AAD Apps stands for “Azure Active Directory Apps”. Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) is an identity and access management service from Microsoft, primarily used to manage user identities and access to Microsoft Azure and Office 365 services. AAD Apps are applications registered and configured in Azure AD to securely access Azure AD resources and other protected resources.
Examples of Azure AD Apps
- Microsoft 365 services: Azure AD is frequently used to manage access to Microsoft 365 services such as Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and Microsoft Teams. Users can log in to these services using their Azure AD identities.
- SaaS applications (Software as a Service): Azure AD can be used for the authentication and authorisation of third-party SaaS applications. This allows users to log in to applications such as Salesforce, Dropbox, Slack and many others using their corporate identities.
- Custom applications: Companies can develop custom applications and use Azure AD for user authentication and authorisation. This enables the integration of applications into the corporate identity infrastructure.
- Azure services: Azure AD can be used to control access to various Azure services and resources such as Azure Virtual Machines, Azure SQL Databases and Azure Storage.
- Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise: Azure AD can be used to manage access to Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint..
Benefits of Azure AD Apps:
- Enhanced security: Azure AD enables central management of user identities and access controls. By using Azure AD Apps, companies can ensure that only authorised users can access protected resources. Authentication and authorisation take place via proven protocols such as OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect.
- Increased productivity: Seamless access to applications and services enables employees to work more efficiently, as they spend less time managing login credentials.
- Single Sign-On (SSO): Azure AD Apps support SSO, meaning that users only need to log in once to access various applications and services. This improves user-friendliness and reduces the need to log in separately for each application.
- Security reporting and monitoring: Azure AD provides tools for monitoring and reporting that allow companies to track identity- and application-related activities in order to detect potential security threats.
What do Azure AD Apps offer companies?
- Multi-factor authentication (MFA): Azure AD supports MFA to increase security. Users must log in not only with their password, but also with an additional verification factor, such as a security code via SMS or an authenticator app.
- User and group management: Administrators can manage users and groups in Azure AD and authorise them to access specific apps. This simplifies the organisation and management of users and resources.
- User-friendly setup: The configuration of Azure AD Apps can be relatively user-friendly, particularly if you use apps included in the Azure AD app galleries. These galleries offer pre-configured applications for a wide range of services.
- Integration into business processes: Azure AD Apps can be integrated into business processes to increase efficiency. For example, they can be incorporated into workflow and approval processes.
