Storage systems at a glance
Traditional and virtualised storage systems
High-performance and, above all, reliable storage systems form the foundation of any data centre. This involves the permanent protection of data in digital form. The diversity of storage systems, storage solutions and storage technologies is steadily increasing.
Fundamentally, a distinction is made between 2 options:
- The traditional approach (DAS, SAN and NAS systems)
- The various virtualised storage solutions (vSAN, and SAN virtualisation in general)
It is essential that storage is tailored to the business in line with the orientation of its IT strategy. There is a suitable system for every purpose:
Whether highly specialised hyper-converged solutions such as:
- Microsoft's native Storage Spaces Direct
- or VMware's vSAN
Depending on the purpose for which a storage system is intended, you can benefit from the advantages of the different system types. The following systems also differ significantly in terms of mass storage reliability.
Storage virtualisation
Highly available, scalable and flexible
Requirements for storage systems in terms of high availability, scalability and flexibility continue to grow steadily.
The virtualisation of a Storage Area Network (SAN virtualisation) with all its numerous facets and features offers your data centre exactly that.
Storage virtualisation generally refers to adding a logical, virtual layer to the storage environment. This decouples the user from the physical realities of the system.

Virtualised storage systems
Software Defined Storage (SDS) is the latest development in the field of storage virtualisation.
SDS describes the ability to manage data storage centrally via a software solution. Put simply, SDS represents the complete separation between the storage layer and the control layer.
This creates benefits such as:
enormous scalability of data volumes
centralised management of the storage unit and storage hardware
vendor independence
and thereby an extreme boost in flexibility
Hyper-converged systems
Another category of storage virtualisation is hyper-converged systems. Put simply, the term hyperconvergence describes the idea of combining storage, compute power and networking in a single device or cluster. This reduces management effort to a minimum, ensures scalability and saves costs. Hyper-converged systems include at least 2 nodes whose local storage is combined into a virtual storage pool. Furthermore, it is easy to expand the systems by adding multiple nodes.

Storage systems – the traditional approach
Direct Attached Storage (DAS)
Simple and high-performing is the deployment of a DAS. This is tied exclusively to a host and can deliver high performance despite low hardware requirements. However, as the name suggests, a DAS is connected directly via SCSI (SAS) or FibreChannel Point-to-Point (FC-P2P) and not connected via the network.
Storage Area Network (SAN)
The extension of DAS is a SAN. Here, storage capacity is presented to server(s) or hosts via various network protocols. The advantage is the dynamic allocation of capacity. Storage can be added or removed again. This is achieved using dynamic disk arrays. A SAN can also connect multiple servers to multiple storage systems over long distances.
Network Attached Storage (NAS)
NAS systems are frequently used as storage servers in small to medium-sized businesses. This storage solution is suitable as cost-effective backup to disk or storage space for archiving. The systems themselves are capable of providing storage space via a wide variety of network protocols. The iSCSI protocol is the most widely used.
