DLP – Data Loss Prevention
Data Loss Prevention explained: How organisations detect and prevent the accidental leakage of sensitive data.
IT Glossary
In brief
Data Loss Prevention (DLP) comprises procedures that prevent the accidental or unauthorised leakage of sensitive data. Rules detect, for example, credit card numbers, health data or documents classified as confidential, and intervene before they leave the organisation.
The response is tiered: a notice to the user, a request for justification, blocking the transfer, or automatic encryption. Finding a balance is key: rules that are too strict cause employees to seek workarounds.
With the advent of AI assistants, DLP is gaining importance: classification and policies help determine what content an assistant is permitted to process. In Microsoft 365, this is implemented via Purview and sensitivity labels, part of AI Governance.
